What is GST e-invoicing?
E-invoicing means every B2B tax invoice you issue must be reported to the government's Invoice Registration Portal (IRP) to get a unique Invoice Reference Number (IRN) and QR code before it's considered a valid tax invoice under GST.
What is the current e-invoicing turnover threshold?
As of now, e-invoicing is mandatory once your aggregate (PAN-wide) turnover crosses ₹5 crore in any financial year since GST began (2017-18). This threshold has been lowered progressively over time (it used to be ₹500 crore, then ₹100 crore, and so on down to ₹5 crore) — always double-check the current rule, since it can change with a new GST notification.
If my turnover drops below ₹5 crore next year, does e-invoicing stop applying?
No. Once your turnover crosses the threshold in ANY financial year, e-invoicing stays mandatory for every year after that — it doesn't switch off again if turnover later falls.
Does e-invoicing apply to B2C invoices too?
E-invoicing (IRN) currently applies to B2B tax invoices, exports, and credit/debit notes against them. Pure B2C invoices are generally outside e-invoicing, though a Dynamic QR Code requirement can apply separately to large B2C sellers — check current CBIC guidance for your situation.
How do I actually generate an IRN?
You submit the invoice details to the government's e-invoice API (directly, or via a GSP/ASP integration) and it returns the IRN and QR code, which must appear on the invoice. BillForge tracks whether e-invoicing applies to you and reminds you to generate the IRN — direct IRP integration is on the roadmap.
